It all started in the fall of 2020... A very good friend of mine had heard that I was interested in medicinal herb gardening and one evening at church he came over and handed me a few bulbs each of three different garlic varieties and said that he had heard about my interest in medicinal herb gardening and that he wanted to give me some garlic varieties that he had been growing very successfully for years. I exclaimed; "You can grow garlic in Kansas?!" I had no idea garlic could be grown virtually anywhere in the US and had always assumed garlic was just like turmeric or ginger that grew mainly in the tropics. I accepted his offer and discovered a real joy for growing great garlic! Since then my list of varieties has expanded quite a bit and my passion for growing garlic has surpassed my abilities to consume so much garlic. So, I determined the best thing for all of this abundance was to offer my garlic to you as well!

Some garlic fun facts!...
- China is the leading garlic consumer in the world at an average of 30 pounds per person, compared to the US average of about 2 pounds per person.
- During WWII garlic was given to wounded soldiers to prevent gangrene. It was known as ‘Russian Penicillin’.
- The heaviest bulb ever was 2 lbs 10 oz. It was grown by Robert Kirkpatrick of Eureka, CA USA in 1985.
- Fear of garlic is called alliumphobia. people with this disorder get a fearful and/or anxious reaction when they see or smell garlic (How awful!).
- You can use garlic to make glue by crushing a clove and using the sap. It is used in China for paper, porcelain, and glass.
- 80% of the garlic consumed in the US is imported from China. Actually, I personally find this a "sad fact", not really a fun fact...
- Greek athletes would take copious amounts of garlic before competition, and Greek soldiers would consume garlic before going into battle believing that it gave them courage (I can't help but wonder though if that was really courage or if the enemy just happened to be down wind when they started fleeing!).
- National Garlic day is April, 19th.
- There are AT LEAST 300 different garlic varieties world wide.

Our garlic is grown using regenerative (beyond organic) practices that rejuvenate the soil and the plants in it, by cover cropping and remineralizing according to the high Brix garden program. Brix is a measure of nutrient density in foods. "Certified Organic" means very little in terms of how good (nutrient dense) for you something is, it only protects you to an extent from chemicals. All of this is done to provide the highest quality garlic with the greatest nutrient density for whatever your needs are. High Brix garlic has an extremely flavorful profile and the plants grown from a high Brix bulb are outstandingly hardy. There is a saying that goes; "you are what you eat" we have certainly found this to be true for our own family which is why we are striving to grow the healthiest garlic possible because we know that healthy soil = healthy plants and healthy plants = healthy people!

A note on garlic orders:
Keep in mind that we sell the largest bulbs first and save the smaller bulbs for later because small bulbs store longer, so the best way to ensure the biggest and best garlic is to pre-order as soon as possible. We usually open pre-orders in the spring or early summer, but the best way to know right away is to join the waitlist in the box below.

Health Benefits of Garlic

"Modern scientists in numerous clinical trials have concluded that Garlic lowers cholesterol while increasing the level of beneficial HDLs (high-density lipoproteins - the so-called "good cholesterol"), lowers blood pressure, thins the blood by slowing the production of the body's own blood pressure raising hormones (which reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke), and fights bacteria like an antibiotic does.
Garlic is a potent antioxidant that has been found to inhibit tumor cell formation. Researchers have been studying the anti-cancer properties of Garlic since the 1940's and are still doing so. It appears that the herb may prevent cells from turning cancerous by enhancing the body's mechanisms for removing toxic substances.
Garlic's phytochemicals are believed to enhance immunity and the National Cancer Institute (January 1992) reported that people who ate the greatest amount of onions and garlic had the lowest incidence of stomach cancer. Other types of cancer such as skin and colon, have also been reported as being lowered.
When crushed, allicin is released. This chemical element is the component that gives Garlic its strong odor and is mainly responsible for the powerful pharmacological properties of the plant. One medium clove of Garlic can equal the antibacterial action equivalent to 1% penicillin.
Garlic also contains about 0.5% of a volatile oil composed of sulfur-containing compounds. Garlic's sulfur compounds, in addition to Selenium and Vitamins A and C containing compounds, make it a potent antioxidant, protecting cell membranes and DNA from damage and disease.
Although Garlic directly attacks bacteria and viruses, it also stimulates the body's natural defenses against foreign invaders. Garlic is reported to be more effective than penicillin against typhus disease, and works well against strep, staph bacteria, and the organisms responsible for cholera, dysentery and enteritis.
It is also generally regarded as a preventative measure for colds, flu and other infectious diseases. Furthermore, scientific studies have shown that garlic stimulates the production of the liver's own detoxifying enzymes which neutralize carcinogens and other environmental toxins. It has also been used to rid the body of intestinal parasites and to treat digestive infections.
Furthermore, garlic increases the activity of white blood cells and T-helper cells (natural killer cells), the cells that are central to the activity of the entire immune system.
Garlic can also be used in treating upper respiratory infections (especially bronchitis), late-onset diabetes, urinary infections, acne, asthma, sinusitis, arthritis, and ulcers. Good question! I recommend starting with the mystery bundle so that you can sample several different kinds and then you will know what your favorite is.
How big should I expect the bulbs to be?
Unless listed as "processing grade" all our garlic bulbs will be sold as 1 3/4 inch minimum diameter. On average there are 8 bulbs in one pound, although that varies from 5-11 bulbs per pound depending on variety.
How much is shipping and when should I expect my order?
We like to keep shipping simple and straight forward. It is $10 flat rate for any size order of anything from our store going anywhere in the US. Garlic orders begin shipping when we finish cleaning the crop, which usually isn't until the end of September depending on how humid the summer was for proper curing. If you are pre-ordering our garlic and ordering something else from our store as well, you will need to order the garlic separately if you want the rest of your order to ship right away. Otherwise we will wait to ship everything when the garlic is ready.
Do you give discounts for bulk orders?
Yes! Bulk pricing starts at 19 pounds minimum order (any combination of varieties). Please contact us for a quote and any additional questions. The same $10 flat rate shipping applies to bulk orders whether you order 20 pounds, or 100 or more.
