I'm really excited to be able to offer potato onion sets for fall planting! These were once a staple among settlers due to their long storage abilities...up to an incredible 18 months!! They lost favor however to the regular bulbing onion because it was more economical to grow commercially than potato onions. Today however, potato onions are coming back in high demand for their amazing productiveness in home gardens, awesome storage capabilities, and sweeter, more succulent flesh then regular bulb onions; like what you get at the grocery store.
Each set will branch out after planting into 2-10 bulbs (like a potato) which will develop into an assortment of different size bulbs (from 1/2" to 3"). You can replant your smaller ones the following fall, while enjoying the medium-large ones in the kitchen all year long!

Planting
These are very easy to grow. In fact, they are at least as easy to grow as regular bulb onions, but more productive and 10x easier than bulb onions grown from little seeds!
Plant each set (a set is a small bulb) about 8"-10" apart, in rows 12" apart during the fall (October-early December, or when you plant garlic). Make sure to plant them right side up only deep enough to have most of the bulb beneath the surface, but the neck still exposed. After planting I recommend mulching for better weed control the following spring and water management. In the spring keep the soil moist and weed free. About midsummer your bulbs are ready to pull when the tops begin to fall over and start dying back. Pull each cluster from the soil and leave the bulbs to cure in a dry shady spot for 3-6 weeks before cleaning off the loose soil and storing them in a dark cool place. Eat the largest bulbs first and save the smaller ones for last, or for planting since they last the longest. Enjoy!
