This is the garlic that started it all for me! My best gardening friend (who I have to thank for getting me started growing garlic) gifted this variety to me years ago. To this day, it remains one of my favorites for its dependable productivity. The exact name is unknown, unfortunately. It's not a new garlic, just an old one that I haven't been able to identify. I do know that it's in the Porcelain family and that it performs very similarly to Music. I formerly have been referring to it as "Music-like", but that felt a bit crude for such a fabulous garlic so until (or if) I find out the real name I am calling it Delmar's garlic, because he is the man who first started growing and sharing it from a random farmer's market garlic he picked up. Delmar is who my friend that got me started growing garlic got his from.
This variety has won many horticulture prizes at the county fairs!
It wouldn't surprise me if I were to find out that Delmar's is a locally adapted strain of Music. Either way, it's a great all-around garlic and an excellent variety to grow when you are starting out. The large, plump cloves are guaranteed to make it a favorite in your kitchen when it comes time to peel!
As with all Porcelain family garlics, this is a very good variety for its health benefits, as porcelains have been found to carry the highest levels of allicin.
Bulb Grading Notes...
The only difference between culinary and seed grade bulbs is size. Seed grade bulbs are 2 inches in diameter or over. Culinary bulbs are 1 1/2 inches or more but less than 2 inches. You can use either grade interchangeably, but if you are planting your garlic, then seed grade bulbs will give you a larger harvest. The smaller culinary bulbs can still be grown, but they may take two seasons to reach full potential. They do, however, tend to store longer and have better flavor than jumbo bulbs.
